Conservation of Catalyst and Charge

Class 6 describes how the conservation of electric charge and catalytic centers impacts the generation of mechanistic rate expressions. Enzymes, homogeneous catalysts, and heterogeneous catalysts are defined.

  • Know
    • the definition of an enzyme, homogeneous catalyst, heterogeneous catalyst, catalytic site, adsorption, desorption, and adsorbed species
    • the defining equations for charge conservation, enzyme conservation, homogeneous catalyst conservation, heterogeneous catalytic site conservation, and surface coverage
  • Understand
    • when a mechanism involves charged reagents or a catalytic entity, a conservation equation must be used when generating a mechanistic rate expression
    • when a conservation equation is used, the full set of Bodenstein steady-state approximations is not mathematically independent, and one approximation must be eliminated
    • in a mechanism, any reagent that is charged or includes a catalytic entity should be treated like a reactive intermediate
    • easily quantifiable concentrations of reagents that are not charged and do not include catalytic entities are acceptable in mechanistic rate expressions
    • the total amount of a catalytic entity is acceptable in mechanistic rate expressions
  • Be able to
    • write conservation equations for charge or catalytic entities
    • generate mechanistic rate expressions that do not include concentrations of charged reagents or reagents that include catalytic entities
